The craft

Cut, lasted andclosed by hand.

Orate runs two benches. Leather work happens in Kanpur, where the tanneries are, and assembly happens in Chennai. A pair takes nine days and passes through six hands. We make about 240 pairs a month, which is as many as two benches can make properly.

Clicking
Panels are cut by hand from the hide, around its scars, so the grain runs the same way on both shoes of a pair.
Lasting
The upper is pulled wet over a wooden last and left on the form for two days before anything is stitched.
Closing
Linings go in unwaxed linen thread. A closed pair carries roughly 2,400 stitches, most of them invisible.
Finishing
Edges are burnished by friction rather than painted, which is slower and is why the colour does not flake.

    1.4 mm split, brushed twice. The brogue holes are punched before the toe is lasted, never after.

    Vegetable tanned, undyed at the edges so the colour deepens where your hand touches it.

    Backed only at the eyestay, so the panel breathes through. Built for a Chennai summer.

  • Stitched foxing where the cup sole meets the upper

    The sole is cemented and then stitched through. The stitch is what keeps it on after the glue gives.
